What level ski ability is needed for this type of expedition?

Participants should have an intermediate ski ability and some level of physical fitness. Ice Axe has guided clients from 15-68, as well as handicapped clients. We can also arrange pre-expedition polar training Boot Camp weekends for an additional fee.

Itinerary

Day 1 Meet in Longyearbyen and check in to hotel. Welcome dinner and briefing.
Day 2-3 Preparation, packing, equipment check, ski training.
Day 4 Morning flight to Ice Station Barneo. MI-8 Helicopter flight to start local ski training. Camp in tents at Barneo or begin.
Day 4-22 Ski expedition over Arctic ice to North Pole, approximately 220km. Pick-up by MI-8 Helicopter from Pole and return to Barneo.
Day 23 Flight to Longyearbyen and transfer to hotel. Celebration dinner.
Day 24 End of expedition. Flights to home destinations.

Expedition Overview

This Expedition is not for the faint-hearted. Sleds will be heavy, conditions difficult, ski days long and homemade cooking limited! You will however, learn more, challenge yourself to the fullest, and take more from this journey than from any other experience in your life. As with the Last Degree, we depart from Longyearbyen on an Antonov 74 and travel 600 miles to Ice Station Barneo. We then travel via MI-8 Helicopter to two degrees (120 nautical miles out) from the Geographic North Pole where we will begin our journey to the Top of the World.
