Two days of training on the Martial Glacier
Ice Axe Guides Rich Meyer & Andrew Mclean
Oct 30 & 31, 2020
The Ice Axe Two day course in Ushuaia is designed for beginner and experienced guests to learn the skills needed to have a safe and successful adventure with us in Antarctica. We always maintain a 4:1 client to guide ratio to make sure clients get the most out of the course. We often split into small groups and begin with the basics and then progress into more advanced skills as the group gains confidence and proficiency. The Martial Glacier is a quick taxi ride from the town of Ushuaia where we meet before departing for the Antarctic Peninsula. Stretching your legs after a few days of travel and getting those first few turns of the season in while enjoying the stunning views of the Beagle Channel are just a few of the added bonuses. The following is subject to change but close to what you can expect.
9am: Meet, greet, and gear check.
10am- 5pm: We travel to the Martial Glacier to climb & ski!
Day #1 we dive into backcountry snow travel, avalanche safety & rescue, skinning techniques, bc skiing techniques, ice axe use, boot & ski crampons, transitions, ascending steep terrain, descending steep terrain, short & long rope travel, self arrest, rope management, knots, & hitches.
9:30am – 5pm: We travel to Martial Glacier to climb & ski!
Day #2 we get into glacier travel & crevasse rescue, glaciology review, building “ERNEST” anchors, raising, lowering, rappelling, and ascending in and out of crevasses, Rope systems using mechanical advantage – including the “Drop C” 3:1, 5:1, etc.
Arrive with backcountry ski gear, glacier gear, food, water, and appropriate clothing for a full day in the mountains. (See Ice Axe gear list for details) We will share some taxi cab rides up to the glacier, (it’s a short trip) and there may be an opportunity to purchase a beer or snack up at the mountain as well! So bring some pesos. The weather and conditions in Ushuaia are variable to say the least. Thanks in advance for being prepared, patient, and flexible!
$600. The Glacier Travel Course is an additional backcountry and ski mountaineering training before our classic Antarctica Cruise.
