Join Ice Axe Expeditions for a trip to Africa to ski in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco and visit the ancient cities of Marrakesh and Imlil.
This ten day trip includes a cross-section of the best natural and cultural attractions in Morocco. Beginning with a tour of the ancient city of Marrakesh and its vast market, we will then transfer to the Agafay Desert for a camel trek and night under the stars. Following that, we’ll move up into the mountains where we do some lift-assisted ski touring at the Oukaimden area and then tour up to a pass and ski down to Tachedirt for another day of ski touring. From here, we will transfer to the mountain town of Imlil and use mules to carry our ski gear up to the Refuge du Toubkal. The next two days will be devoted to climbing and skiing the highest point in Morocco, the 13,671’ (4167m) Jebel Toubkal and skiing the vast terrain around the refuge. On our last day, we will transfer from Imlil back to Marrakech in time to make the early afternoon international flights back to our homes.
During our time in the mountains, we will be staying in alpine huts with breakfast and dinner included. For our time in Marrakesh and Imlil, we will be staying in top rated hotels and working with a local outfitter for city tours and transportation.
The High Atlas Mountains of Morocco are home to the best skiing on the African continent. This trip takes place at the start of the Moroccan spring when the snowpack is at its highest and snow conditions can range from powder to perfect corn. With a wide variety of terrain ranging from mellow bowls all the way up to 2,500’+ couloirs, there is something for every skier and condition. The ascent of Jebel Toubkal involves a day with 3,000’/1000m of skinning and booting to reach the spectacular summit, followed by a sweeping ski descent all the way back down to the Toubkal hut.
This unique trip captures a slice of the people, culture and skiing of one of the most exotic locations on earth. All in-country logistics, lodging and mountain guiding are included. A separate four day excursion to the Sahara Desert for some incredible scenery and a chance to go sand skiing may be added on to the end of the trip.
